TRENTON >> A teenage city resident drowned in the Delaware River Monday evening.
Officials say the 16-year-old male, whose name has not been released, was swimming with friends around 5:50 p.m. when he was pulled further into the water.
The victim’s friends told police they tried to reach him but couldn’t help before he was pulled underwater.
Police and firefighters were sent to the rear of Riverview Plaza where fire department personnel eventually removed the teen from the water.
Officials say the boy was pronounced dead at the hospital a little after 6 p.m.
A Middlesex County medical examiner is expected to perform an autopsy to confirm the teen’s cause and manner of death.
