Emily Shin one of three in the state to take top honors in Smart Choices Scholarship

A Camas High School student athlete is one of three from the state to receive a prestigious scholarship from the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association.

Emily Shin, a wrestler and a cheerleader for the Papermakers, will receive $5,000 as one of the top winners of the 12th annual Smart Choices Scholarship.

The scholarship is provided by the WIAA, Gesa Credit Union, the Dairy Farmers of Washington, and Les Schwab Tires.

Shin, as a wrestler, helped her team to its first league championship in program history. Her leadership off the mat includes being the vice president of the school’s DECA program as well as membership in the National Honor Society. She has used her platform to make a positive impact in her community.

A senior, Shin also maintains a 3.99 grade-point average.

Shin has logged more than 400 community service hours, including a trip to Guatemala where she helped build a multi-sport court for children to play and thrive.

Madeline Allred of Shelton and Natalie DeMarco of Enumclaw also earned $5,000 scholarships.

“The WIAA is proud to honor another impressive group of Smart Choices Scholarship recipients,” said Mick Hoffman, the executive director of the WIAA. “Each of these student-athletes has had an incredibly positive impact on competitively, in the classroom, and as a leader in the school community.”

The WIAA and its sponsors also gave out 12 $1,000 scholarships. Among those recipients was Alexia Bravo of Union High School.
