Foundation stone laid for Madhav Netralaya Eye Hospital & Research Centre
HOSMAC will provide design consultancy for the Eye Hospital that aims to advance ophthalmic research and treatment
The foundation stone for Madhav Netralaya Eye Hospital and Research Centre was laid on Sunday in a ceremony attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The institution, aiming to be a pioneer in ophthalmic care, will be designed by HOSMAC.
Madhav Netralaya’s architectural vision integrates functionality with aesthetics, prioritising patient-centric care. Its elliptical, eye-shaped architecture is strategically aligned along the east-west axis to maximise natural light towards the north while reducing heat exposure. The building’s rooftop solar panels have an installed capacity of 550 kWp, for sustainability and energy efficiency in healthcare architecture. The hospital’s facade is an eyelid which features curved sandstone walls, protecting the interior clinical spaces from noise and dust pollution. The stone is richly coloured, adding visual depth and textures that are contrasted with panoramic windows.
Spread across 5.8 acres, this 250-bed super-specialty eye hospital will offer world-class yet affordable eye care services. With a built-up area of approximately 4 lakh sq. ft., the institute will feature 10 specialised OPDs, 2 dedicated OPDs for community services (Samudayik Sewa), 14 cutting-edge modular operation theatres (OTs), including a dedicated Lasik Surgery Unit, an Eye Bank, and a comprehensive Research Centre. The BARN OT features an open-plan surgical area, where multiple patients are treated in dedicated spaces alongside one another, with each station equipped with an ultra-clean air canopy to minimise the risk of infection.
To advance ophthalmic research and treatment, the hospital will incorporate facilities such as a gene therapy unit, biorepository, genetic lab, clinical trials centre, outreach camp office, simulation lab, and vision research centre. The facility will also include a conference hall, a learning centre, and an AYUSH department.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Vivek Desai, Founder and Managing Director, HOSMAC, said, “It is an honour to be part of this visionary project, which will redefine eye care in Central India. At HOSMAC, we believe in designing healthcare institutions that are not only patient-centric but also equipped with the latest advancements in medical technology. Madhav Netralaya is set to be a world-class facility, ensuring accessible, high-quality, and specialised ophthalmic care for all.”
