Fulbright chooses 35 Brown students in latest recipient cohort

PROVIDENCE – Belarus, Denmark, the Czech Republic, Germany and Tajikistan are among the 25 countries in which 35 Brown University undergraduates, graduate students and recent graduates will pursue research goals and teach English as Fulbright Scholars during the 2018-2019 academic year.

Linda Dunleavy, associate dean of the college for fellowships, said in a statement: “Brown students understand the importance of engaging with people from different cultural backgrounds than their own and are open to putting themselves in new and unusual circumstances.”

The most popular host countries among the Brown cohort are Belarus, the Czech Republic, Germany, South Korea and Taiwan, which will host two Brown-affiliated recipients each; and Spain, which will host three.

The list of recipients was released by the Providence-based college on June 8.

One such recipient, a Brown Africana studies Ph.D. candidate Watufani Poe, will research black LGBTQ activism and community-building building in Brazil

“I hope the time the Fulbright fellowship gives me in Brazil will allow for a more robustly developed project,” he said, in a statement. “Also, coming from a relatively young Ph.D. program at Brown, I’m excited to be able to represent Brown’s Africana programs within national fellowship programs such as the Fulbright.”

A flagship international and cultural exchange program, the Fulbright program is sponsored by the U.S. government and focuses on relationship building between United States residents and individuals living in more than 140 countries across the globe seeking to address global challenges.
