Republicans Make Case for Carbon Tax

PBS Public Affairs Show Airs Carbon Tax for Climate Change

...it is 'a necessary time' to introduce a carbon-tax solution to the climate problem.”
— Alex Flint, Executive Director, Alliance for Market Solutions
WASHINGTON, D.C., USA, July 6, 2018 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Republicans are suspicious of climate science and cool to taxes. Not quite.

A group of influential Republican donors and policymakers is working quietly to bring about a change. They want to replace confusing, contradictory and counterproductive government energy and environmental regulations with a simple carbon tax.

Under the umbrella of an organization created for this purpose, the Alliance for Market Solutions, Republicans who have been at the top in business, academia and the think tanks have embraced the need to reduce carbon emissions and to free up markets to decide the best technologies for a carbon-curbed future.

The case for a carbon tax is made on this week’s “White House Chronicle,” the news and public affairs show.

The episode will air nationwide this weekend on PBS and public, educational and government (PEG) access stations, and the commercial AMG TV network. The audio will air four times on SiriusXM Radio’s P.O.T.U.S., Channel 124 (Saturday at 8 a.m. and 9 p.m. ET; Sunday at noon ET; and Monday at 2 a.m. ET).

Alex Flint, executive director of the Alliance, said on the show that it is “a necessary time” to introduce a carbon-tax solution to the climate problem. While it will be a “challenging conversation” with policymakers, he has already heard from one who said, “It is very good policy, but we just have to work through the politics.”

Flint, a longtime staffer to Pete Domenici, the late Republican senator from New Mexico who was a leading voice on budget and energy policy, and more recently a vice president of the Nuclear Energy Institute, is joined on the program by Alex Brill of the American Enterprise Institute and a veteran staffer of the House Ways and Means Committee, where taxes are written.

“These are two of the most impressive people we have interviewed in our 20-plus years on the air,” Llewellyn King, executive producer and host, said of this week’s episode. “They make a compelling case for this policy,” he said.

Sponsors of the Alliance include John Rowe, former chairman of Exelon, and Marvin Odum, former chairman and president of Shell Oil Company.
