Uruguay seeks to deepen cooperation with Angola

Luanda, ANGOLA, September 14 - The Uruguayan ambassador to Angola, Álvaro González Otero, reaffirmed on Wednesday in Luanda the intention of his country to deepen the level of bilateral cooperation with Angola in the framework of the existing political and economic relations between the two nations.,

The Uruguayan diplomat, who was speaking on an interview to ANGOP on the celebration of independence of this Latin American country marked on hursday, said the deepening of relations between the two countries will consist of the implementation and revitalization of several agreements already signed by both governments in various domains.     

 

Álvaro González Otero announced the holding in the near future in Luanda of the First Joint Meeting of high level cooperation, which is expected to boost the bilateral relations and whose agenda was prepared during the visit to Angola of the general director of international cooperation of Uruguay.

   

To provide sustainability to his country’s willingness to strengthen bilateral cooperation, the ambassador said the Uruguayan President, Tabaré Vázquez, could visit Angola on a date to be defined.

 

However, added the diplomat, the Uruguayan diplomatic representation in Angola will be soon strengthened by a counsellor, who will participate in the projects underway in Angola.  

 

Speaking on the current economic reforms being implemented in Angola, the ambassador said the government of his country has already been informed about the new Law on Private Investment, which in its turn will report about it to the Uruguayan investors.  

 

He also recognized that the measures encompassed in the recently approved investment law give more openness for foreign investors to operate in Angola without constraints.

 

In the first semester of 2018, the trade between the two countries was favourable for Angola through the sale of crude-oil to Uruguay worth USD 100 million, while purchase of products from this Latin American reached USD five million.

 

Angola exports crude-oil to Uruguay and imports meat, fish, rice, milk, cheese among other products.

 

The cooperation between the two nations is based on farming and agricultural research.

 

In 2013 it was signed a general agreement on cooperation in the economic, scientific, technical and cultural domains and a Memorandum of Understanding on Political Consultation in 2008, the Agreement on the exemption of visas in Diplomatic and Service Passports(2013)and finally the agreement for the training of students signed between FESA foundation and UDELAR University of Uruguay, signed in May this year.

 

The Diplomatic relations between the two countries date back to March 1987. In January 2015 the Uruguayan embassy was opened in Angola.  

 

Álvaro González Otero is the first diplomat of Uruguay in Angola.

 

In January of the present year it was authorized the opening of Angola's consulate-general in the South American country.
